SCORPIONS

Scorpions are well-known for loving hot dry weather, mostly in the southwest. These arachnids are easily identifiable by their long, curved sectioned tails which are fitted with barbed stingers. A scorpion’s sting can deliver venom that may or may not be dangerous to humans, depending on the scorpion species.

In general, scorpions tend to be nocturnal and spend most of their time hiding and waiting for available prey. They may eat insects such as crickets or roaches; some larger species may also kill and eat mice or other small animals.

Types of Scorpions

Scorpions are arachnids known for their intimidating appearance and venomous sting. In the state of Arizona, four species of scorpions are commonly found. The bark scorpion, which is yellowish-tan in color, is the most well-known and dangerous of the group. They are the only species capable of vertical climbing and are commonly found clinging to tree trunks or the sides of buildings. Their venom is strong and can cause painful swelling, muscle spasms, and breathing difficulties in humans. The stripetail scorpion is the most common scorpion in the state and has yellowish coloration with prominent dorsal stripes. While they are less than three inches in length, their venom is less potent than that of the bark scorpion. The giant hairy scorpion is the largest scorpion in the country, measuring up to 5 or 6 inches in length. Although they are covered in dense hair and are intimidating in appearance, they are not particularly dangerous to humans and primarily feed on smaller scorpions and centipedes. Lastly, the yellow ground scorpion, similar in appearance to the bark scorpion, is less dangerous and does not climb vertical surfaces.

ARE SCORPIONS A PROBLEM?

In their natural hot climate habitat, scorpions play an important role in killing insects and vermin to control pest populations in outdoor areas and fields. However, these scorpions can become a real nuisance if they begin to encroach in human homes and yards.

Some scorpions, like the Bark Scorpion, have powerful venom that can pose a danger to humans. Although deaths from scorpion stings are rare, they can be very uncomfortable and cause serious illness, especially in children and the elderly.

Compared to other pests, scorpions are rarely found inside the home. They tend to travel fairly long distances in search of food and are more common outdoors than inside. However, under the right conditions and when food is plentiful, scorpions may nest in and around your home. When that happens, it’s time to call in professional help. We are experienced to manage any scorpion infestation around your home or business.

All scorpions glow a pale green when seen under a blacklight or when viewed at night with a blacklight flashlight. One of the best ways to find scorpions is to use a blacklight flashlight on a dark, otherwise unlit night. The glow of the scorpion will alert you to its presence and give you an idea of how many may be in the area.
